Many women experience a change in their breasts over time, either with age or following child birth and breast feeding. These changes result in a descent of the breast tissue and nipple / areola complex. Breast lift surgery is often performed to elevate and reshape the breasts to restore a more youthful shape and appearance.
 
GOALS

​

The goals of breast lift surgery are to lift the breasts, remove excess breast skin and improve symmetry of the breasts to a more youthful position with minimally visible scarring.
 
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR THIS SURGERY?

​

The ideal candidate is a person with a healthy body weight who has breasts with adequate size, but that have descended over time. I often advise heavier patients to reach a healthier weight before undergoing the surgery, as the results are always better once you have reached your target weight.
 
SCARS

​

I offer three types of breast lift surgery, a Wise Pattern (known as an anchor scar or inverted T mastopexy scar), a Vertical mastopexy (known as a lollipop scar), and a periareolar mastopexy (scar goes around the areola). These techniques are not appropriate for all patients, and the most appropriate technique is selected based on the pre-operative consultation.
 
RECOVERY

You will spend a couple of hours in the recovery room at the surgery centre before you go home. You will need someone to pick you up from the centre, and stay with you in your home overnight. You may have a drain in each breast which will be removed by a home care nurse within a day or 2. Over the first 7 – 10 days after your surgery, you will improve quickly, and begin to move around with more ease. However, it will be a full 6 weeks before you feel completely recovered from your surgery. No heavy lifting after surgery for 3 weeks. Do not wear an underwire bra for 6 weeks following surgery.
 
POTENTIAL SHORTCOMINGS

It is possible to have an undesirable result even if everything goes smoothly. Although every effort is made, it is impossible to create breasts that are perfectly symmetric in shape, size and position. Breast lift surgery also does not address the extra tissue that extends into the side beneath the arm. Because of this, patients often request liposuction of this area at the same time.
 
RISKS

​

As with any surgery, there is a possibility that you will experience a complication. These include bleeding after the surgery (hematoma), undesirably thick scars, fluid collection beneath the skin (seroma), numbness in the breasts or nipples, infection, blood clots and delayed wound healing. This surgery requires a general anesthetic, which carries some risk as well.
